American Honda Motor Corporation is recalling 440,830 Honda Odyssey minivans due to a software programming error that could lead to the side and curtain airbags in the second- and third-row seats inadvertently deploying during rough driving conditions.
Honda said in a recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and posted on X on April 15 that the minivans are model years 2018–2022 and were manufactured between January of 2017 and June of 2022. Honda Manufacturing of Alabama began producing minivans at the facility in Lincoln in 2001.
According to the NHTSA, vehicles in the recall population have side and curtain airbags with faulty deployment parameters for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) control logic, which determines when airbags should deploy in the event of a side impact or crash. The current settings in the affected vehicles could lead to the airbags accidentally deploying in adverse driving conditions, such as when traveling over potholes, speed bumps or hitting debris on the roadway.
“The SRS control logic for the second and third rows contain insufficient deployment threshold margin, allowing [signal] inputs to be misinterpreted as side impacts and causing inadvertent deployment of the side and side curtain airbags,” the NHTSA recall report stated.
The SRS units were manufactured at DENSO Manufacturing Tennessee’s 2.6-million square-foot facility in Maryville.
Honda said in the recall announcement that it received its first notice of the problem in November 2017. It continued to analyze the issue, and in June 2021, after examining returned parts and minivans that had experienced sudden deployment of side and curtain airbags, Honda’s internal investigations team determined that certain driving conditions could cause inadvertent deployment.
As of April 2, Honda said it had received 130 warranty claims regarding issues with accidental deployment of the second- and third-row seating airbags, leading to 25 reports of injuries sustained by passengers.
Honda Odyssey owners will be notified by mail about the airbag issue beginning on June 5. In the interim, Honda said that licensed dealerships will reprogram the software in the SRS’s electronic control unit or replace the entire unit at no cost to owners. Owners can determine if their minivan is a part of the recall population by inputting their vehicle identification number (VIN) into the NHTSA’s recall portal beginning on April 16.
Owners can contact Honda’s customer service line at 888-234-2138 and reference recall number UNW to learn more about the recall.
In a separate recall announcement also posted on X, Chrysler is recalling 65,348 Ram trucks due to an issue with software in the vehicles’ instrument panel cluster that may prevent the cluster from working properly during ignition or while driving.
The recall population affects Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks for model years 2025–2026. Chrysler will begin mailing recall notices to affected truck owners on May 28. Owners can bring their trucks to a dealership for a free software update. VINs will be searchable beginning on April 16, the NHTSA said.
