Shen Yun Performing Arts ended its run at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on April 13 to great reviews from many theatergoers. The program brought to life 5,000 years of Chinese culture in song and dance–a taste of China before communism, fulfilling its mission to revive an ancient culture that was once almost lost.
Manbir Randhawa, an immigration consultant, said, “I must say that the organization of the event is great. The event so far, and the performance so far, is going very, very nice. We definitely want to look forward to more performances, more such performances. It’s great. Acrobats, and the props used are good. Lighting is great, sound, even the effects are awesome. Look forward to that.”
Audience members were mesmerized by the choreography, including the interaction with the digital background and the performers.
Aziz Ladham, executive of the advisory board and senior lead, said, “I’m just mesmerized by the way the whole thing is choreographed, the interaction with the video, and the live performance. It’s just mind-blowing. I’m into photography, so I can appreciate the art and the sequencing and the timing, and [the] beautiful, colorful costumes. It’s exciting. If rebirth is true, I want to come as a Chinese and be one of those performers. Those guys are just amazing.”
Anil Sharma, a local businessman, said,” Every segment has a story, and the story has a good moral after that. So that’s the best part about it. So once you finish the first story, you’re always looking for the next one. What lesson are you going to see there? And the performance in each story is so incredible.”
The spirituality of the performance also moved many theatergoers, something they felt was missing in today’s society.
Artist, Teresa Neary said, “I just find that the color is unbelievable. We need more color in the world, and the way that it’s just so focused on the divine. And in this day and age, we just need more focus on the divine, and bringing all that because color and movement is what’s going to heal the world.”
Brenda Kobzey, who is retired from legal advocacy for social justice, said, “I will say that it is probably the most visually exciting performance that I’ve seen. It’s just absolutely spectacular. The costumes, the music, the message, everything about it was absolutely spectacular.”
Ms. Neary further said, “I just found that this whole experience is something that’s going to open up all of our eyes to the Divine and to the brightness of and the goodness that there is.”
Shen Yun will perform in Calgary, Alberta, from April 15 to 17.
