In China, the HSBC Flash PMI released in the early morning on Sept. 20 in Hong Kong showed that a key forward-looking gauge of Chinese economic activity remains below 50 for the 11th consecutive month.

The HSBC Purchasing Index (PMI) printed 47.9 in September, showing the eleventh consecutive reading below 50. A reading below 50 means China's manufacturing sector is contracting, not expanding. 

The HSBC measure fell to 50.4, down from 52.7 in May.According to investopedia.com, a PMI of above 50 is an indication of expansion in the manufacturing sector, compared with the previous month, while below 50 indicates contraction.

Two major European banks reported markedly higher earnings, including the U.K.’s HSBC Holdings and France’s BNP Paribas.

The banks involved are Banque de France, BPCE1 , Banque postale, BNP-Paribas, Confédération Nationale du Crédit Mutuel, Crédit Agricole, Crédit du Nord, Crédit Industriel et Commercial, LCL, HSBC, and Société Générale.

In November, HSBC China Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 47.7, the lowest figure in the past 32 months. The index is a measure of manufacturing activity and a number below 50 indicates manufacturing activity is shrinking.

HSBC came in last place among all credit card issuers on the survey, followed by Citi Cards and Capital One Bank.
