BUENOS AIRES, Argentina—On the evening of April 9, Shen Yun International Company opened its run at the Teatro Ópera in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to a full house. Audience members were immersed in the beauty and depth of the performance, responding with warm, sustained applause throughout the evening.
Among those in attendance was Gabriela Flores, a national congresswoman from the province of Salta. After the performance, she expressed admiration for Shen Yun, noting that its distinctive artistic style and rich cultural content guide audiences through 5,000 years of Chinese history while conveying values that transcend national boundaries.
In honor of Shen Yun’s 20th anniversary of touring the globe, Ms. Flores offered words of encouragement to the company’s artistic director. She said she believes that “the final chapter of this work—which I can’t spoil—will one day become a reality.”
The final piece of the performance depicts the Creator’s salvation during times of peril, offering hope that goodness will prevail and humanity will be restored.
“He should not give up; he should keep going,” she added. “We will stand behind what he is doing, which is communicating with us and telling everyone what China is.”
Ms. Flores said the performance’s deeper message resonated strongly with her. “I really liked how it captures the essence of the Chinese people, which is the same essence shared by all human beings. That is what connects all countries,” she said. “It’s so similar, isn’t it? In every country. We human beings are one.”
Although she had previously seen Chinese opera and ballet, Ms. Flores noted that Shen Yun offered a different experience. “The show surprised me from a visual standpoint,” she said. “I had seen other Chinese opera and ballet performances before, but this one takes you through Chinese history and its cultural development.”
Based in New York, Shen Yun is the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, with a mission to revive China’s divinely inspired heritage.
Endowed with 5,000 years of civilization, China was once known as the “Land of the Divine.” For millennia, its people believed that by keeping their hearts pure and upholding high moral standards, they would receive blessings from the heavens.
This divinely inspired culture ushered in centuries of glory and prosperity. However, after the communist takeover, all this traditional culture was systematically destroyed. Today, Shen Yun is dedicated to bringing back the beauty and goodness of pre-communist China.
“I really liked how it touches on the spiritual aspect, because it is very broad,” Ms. Flores said. “Although we move through different stages—from 5,000 years ago to the present—the idea of faith and values does not change. The context and setting may change, but people continue to hold on to the same values. That is what gives a culture its identity.”
Ms. Flores was deeply impressed by the portrayal of people of faith upholding their beliefs in the face of adversity. “I was moved to see how China preserves its values and culture, regardless of the political context,” she said. “I found that especially meaningful, and I think it applies to everyone. No matter what political circumstances a society may face, we see here how a culture—its symbols and traditions—can endure for thousands of years, just like religious values.”
She also affirmed Shen Yun’s global stature. “I believe Shen Yun is a world-class international performance suitable for any global stage,” she said. “Any stage would be honored to host a show like this—it brings brilliance both to the audience and to the theater itself. I think it is something truly fabulous.”
She recommended the performance to others. “I would recommend that everyone come see it—this is a show that presents China through the lens of its culture.”
