Airbag Defects Lead Fiat Chrysler and Honda to Recall Thousands of Vehicles

Two automakers are recalling more than 30,000 vehicles due to potential airbag malfunctions that could increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Honda both issued recent recall notices because of sensor issues linked to airbag function. Here’s a look at the vehicles impacted by both recalls.

Fiat Chrysler Recall

Fiat Chrysler issued an update last week regarding its recall of 21,194 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs after identifying a software problem that may cause the door airbag pressure sensors to fail.

“As a result, the side airbag(s) may not work properly in a crash,” the June 3 update from Transport Canada said.

The recall affects 2022 to 2025 Grand Cherokee SUVs as well as 2023 to 2025 Grand Cherokee L models. The advisory updated the initial May 21 recall.

The automaker announced that it will notify vehicle owners in writing to bring their cars to a dealership for an update of the occupant restraint controller software.

Vehicle owners can contact the company for more information or visit the Mopar website to determine if their vehicle is under recall. Mopar serves as the automotive parts service division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Honda Recall

Honda expanded a prior airbag recall in response to similar airbag safety issues. The most recent recall impacts 12,371 vehicles and includes cars, light trucks, vans, minivans, and SUVs, according to the advisory published on Transport Canada’s website.

The initial recall was issued by Honda on May 21 and was later updated on June 5.

“On certain vehicles, the weight sensor for the front passenger seat may not have been manufactured properly,” the recall says. “As a result, the passenger-front airbag and knee airbag could deploy in a crash that doesn’t require them to.”

The Honda vehicles listed below, along with their corresponding model years, are part of the recall:

• Acura MDX 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024
• Acura RDX 2021
• Acura TLX 2018-2021
• Honda Accord 2018-2022
• Honda Civic 2016-2022
• Honda CR-V 2017-2022
• Honda HR-V 2019-2021
• Honda Insight 2019-2021
• Honda Odyssey 2018-2025
• Honda Passport 2019-2021
• Honda Pilot 2018-2021
• Honda Ridgeline 2019-2021

The company said it will notify owners by mail to advise them to bring their vehicle to a dealership for the replacement of the passenger-front seat weight sensor.
