Day 2 of Government Shutdown: White House Says Layoffs Coming Very Soon
On day 2 of the government shutdown, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said federal layoffs would be made “very soon,” and that the numbers could reach into the thousands. President Donald Trump said he will meet with the head of the Office of Management and Budget to determine which agencies and programs to cut.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Trump administration will support struggling soybean farmers, and an announcement is expected next Tuesday. Chinese importers have not yet bought soybeans from the fall U.S. harvest due to the trade war between Washington and Beijing, costing U.S. farmers billions of dollars in lost sales.
Two people were killed and three others are in a serious condition on Thursday after a car ramming and knife attack at a synagogue in Manchester, England. The attack took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. The suspect is believed to have been shot and killed by police.
