“I’ve seen 1,500 bipolar cases, and it’s amazing how maybe 5 percent of them do so extraordinarily well,” says William J. Walsh, PhD, who researches and develops nutritional treatments for mental illness.

“I’ve had billionaires, captains of industry, symphony conductors, a couple of Miss Americas, Hollywood actors, great athletes,” he says, pointing to how accomplished many with bipolar disorder are.

But that’s an “important clue” to what drives the disorder, he says: “It means that bipolar does not affect the entire brain.”

“Bipolar Unlocked PART 1” revealed genetic and nerve-cell origins of bipolar disorder, based on Walsh’s eight-year investigation; “PART 2” uncovers the likely cause of the mania-depression cycle.

“If you could stop the mania, depression won’t happen because mania causes depression,” he says.

Over 30 years, Walsh has developed biochemical treatments for clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses that are used by doctors around the world.

Based on his findings of why bipolar disorder begins and why mood switching persists, Walsh highlights testing and treatment paths to stop the disorder or prevent it from ever starting.

Walsh is president of the nonprofit Walsh Research Institute.
