The “longevity project” tracked the lives of 1,500 Americans from childhood through to death. Which character traits are shared by those who lived the longest?

“A man who is married for a long period of time, over decades, if the wife passes away, they tend to pass away within six months to a year after the wife’s passing away,” says Dr. Noto. “And that is true for men who are healthy or unhealthy.”

Whereas women’s lifespans tend not to be affected by whether they’re married or not, he adds.

What is different in the social life of women versus men that could account for this?

Dr. Noto is a physician and a rehabilitation and pain-medicine specialist based in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. He has twice been ranked in the top one percent of American doctors by the American Registry.
