For decades, MS (multiple sclerosis) and rheumatoid arthritis have been treated as immune system problems. Thus, drugs that suppress the immune system are used to try and stop the damage. 

This has been largely ineffective, says 26-year neurosurgeon and researcher, Russel Blaylock – MS keeps progressing, joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis continues. Medicine has never fully explained why.

Blaylock joins “Vital Signs” to present the biochemical answer to this question – a mechanism he’s spent decades researching. 

When animals with MS had their glutamate (neurotransmitter) blocked – without touching the immune system at all the lesions never formed, says Blaylock. The immune system was still raging. The damage wasn’t there.

Glutamate is also a component of MSG (monosodium glutamate), the processed food ingredient scrutinized since the 60s for potential toxic effects.

The immune system, Blaylock argues, is the trigger. Not the weapon. The real destruction is carried out by excitotoxicity – glutamate flooding out of immune cells into surrounding tissue, over-stimulating cells until they die. A process that continues long after the immune reaction burns out.

He calls it immunoexcitotoxicity; and it connects MS, arthritis, lupus, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s under a single mechanism – one that opens up entirely new possibilities for how these diseases can be understood and addressed.
