The Simple Fix for Insulin Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is reversible, says best-selling author of “The Diabetes Code” Dr. Jason Fung, pointing to lap-banding (weight loss) surgery as evidence of this.

Watch our exclusive episode, only on NTD.

“Lap banding and bariatric surgery is a sort of extreme way of creating weight loss. It’s very successful at creating weight loss, of course. The interesting thing is that the diabetes would go down by like 90 percent after bariatric surgery,” he says

How could simply eating less and losing weight bring relief to those with Type 2 diabetes?

Naturally, the answer lies in resolving the insulin resistance that causes type 2 diabetes. But achieving this demands that we understand what causes this insulin resistance in the first place, and Dr. Fung is at the forefront of redefining this concept.

There is a key misconception that the cells are dysfunctioning and not letting insulin in. This “cell starvation” model reflects the reality of Type 1 diabetes—whereas type 2 diabetes is more the opposite.

“[In Type 2 diabetes] you don’t see very skinny people, you see the opposite—you see very fat people and people with big fatty liver,” says Dr. Fung.

“You don’t see people that are starving, as you do with the Type 1—lack of insulin; here, the insulin levels are too high. And there’s still a lot of … glucose in the blood.”

How does “cell overflow” rather than “cell starvation” explain the cause of type 2 diabetes insulin resistance?

How can we normalize glucose-packed cells to reverse Type 2 diabetes?

As a nephrologist, Dr. Fung specializes in treating acute and chronic kidney problems and disease, including diabetes and kidney disease.

He joins Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to present a simple, natural, and scientifically grounded path to reversing Type 2 diabetes.
