UK Prime Minister Starmer Meets Trump in Washington; Trump Vows to Double Tariffs on China
U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met at the White House on Thursday, after French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent trip to Washington.
Trump has threatened to double tariffs on China. An initial 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods went into effect earlier this month. He said the 25 percent tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods would go into effect on March 4, as planned.
Several of Trump’s economic picks faced questions at a Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday. Jonathan McKernan, nominated to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, testified before the Senate Banking Committee on his selection. Alongside McKernan, the panel also considered the nomination of Bill Pulte as head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
