Trump Pressures China on Trade Deal, Says Tariffs Will Come Down; Fed to Restart Collecting Defaulted Student Loans

President Donald Trump commented further on U.S.–China trade tensions on Tuesday, saying tariffs on China will be reduced. He warned that the United States will “set the deal” if Beijing fails to agree to new trade terms. The remarks come as the United States holds trade talks with dozens of countries this week.

Vice President JD Vance met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as part of efforts to move closer to a trade deal. Vance said a partnership with India is essential to prevent the advent of what he described as a “dark time” for humanity.

The Trump administration is set to resume collections on defaulted student loans after a five-year pause. The Department of Education announced that collections will begin on May 5, affecting millions of borrowers.
