Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Manila for talks amid efforts from Washington to expand its security options in the Philippines to deter any move by the CCP against self-ruled Taiwan.

The United States has no defense pact with Taiwan.

Japan in December adopted key security and defense reforms, including a counterstrike capability that makes a break from the country's exclusively self-defense-only postwar principle.

The Chinese regime, which considers self-ruled Taiwan as part of its territory, has vowed to unify the island by force, if necessary, and has consistently opposed American arms sales to Taiwan.

The Taiwan Relations Act is a law that authorizes the United States to provide the island with military equipment for self-defense. The law was signed after Washington ended its diplomatic ties with Taipei in favor of Beijing in 1979.

Why not enforce a blockade and “starve” Taiwan into submission? While it is probably self-sufficient in food, 97.7 percent of its energy supply is imported (and a lot of that from Australia).

On Jan. 15, a senior Taiwan defense official announced plans for four major defense purchases from the United States. This was in addition to the $40 billion announced in November and the $11 billion announced in December.
