Huawei is banned from the 5G networks of several developed countries, including Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

For example, China tried to coerce the Faroe Islands to sign a 5G contract with Huawei by threatening the country that it would drop a trade agreement, the official added.

Huawei and Bell have also partnered to test 5G technology in rural communities.

Reuters reported earlier this month that the United States will push its allies at a meeting in Prague on May to adopt shared security and policy measures that will make it more difficult for Huawei to dominate 5G telecommunications networks.

The federal government is yet to make a decision on whether it will ban Huawei for its 5G network. The company was previously banned in 2012 by the former federal Labor government from participating in the National Broadband Network.

Huawei is currently the biggest contributor to 5G standards, according to a March report by U.S.-based research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics.

Canada is the only member of the Five Eyes to have not yet banned Huawei from its 5G infrastructure, or not have a plan to phase it out, in the case of the UK. Tech integration with China is incompatible, Harper said.

Last year, the UK government reversed its position on Huawei, banning the Chinese telecoms giant from its 5G mobile phone network.

Earlier this year, Barr raised concerns about the threat of China's dominance in the global 5G infrastructure market—capturing 40 percent of the market through telecommunications companies Huawei and ZTE.

The federal government will need to decide within 30 days whether Huawei should be banned from participating in Canada's 5G networks, as a vote passed in Parliament on Wednesday requiring the Liberals to declare their position on the matter.

The federal government is currently reviewing the security implications of allowing Huawei to take part in the development of Canada’s emerging 5G network.

As Australia has learnt, Huawei is an entity very close to Beijing and under its control. One of the "14 grievances" Beijing outlined against the Australian government had been to let Huawei be involved in the nation's 5G network.

And on the networking front, Japan’s SoftBank became the latest potential customer to reject Huawei for 5G networking equipment, announcing on May 31 that it would be turning to European telecom giants Nokia and Ericsson instead.

And when it comes to rolling out the next-generation 5G technology, Huawei has cooperated with many local telecom providers in Africa for trial runs, including MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile operator; Vodacom, based in South Africa; and Safaricom,

It seeks to protect data passing through telecommunications networks, cloud-based systems, and apps from being accessed by Beijing, such as by not using Huawei equipment for 5G networks.

The Chinese embassy in Canberra also recently leaked a list of grievances against Australia, among which are Australia's foreign investment rules, the banning Huawei from Australia’s 5G network, and Australia’s call for an inquiry into the origins of

country's 5G mobile network.

Last November Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding on testing 5G solutions with investment group PPF.

Ottawa banned Huawei and ZTE from its 5G wireless infrastructure on security grounds in May 2022.

Wyckhouse said that the finding was “particularly concerning given Huawei's dominance on the eve of 5G implementation,” and suggested that governments rolling out 5G networks take these risks into account.

A poll done by Nanos in October following the release of the two Michaels, for example, showed that 76 percent of those surveyed agreed that Canada should restrict or ban Huawei from participating in our 5G network.

The Chinese Embassy also leaked an unofficial document to Australian media detailing 14 grievances the CCP had against the Australian government, including its ban on Huawei from participating in its 5G network rollout, and tighter foreign interference

in Australia’s 5G infrastructure.

“The [People’s Republic of China] has used economic coercion to compel our political leadership to lift the ban on Huawei and ZTE participation in our 5G network.”

Huawei systems are a Trojan horse that Beijing can use to launch an intercontinental digital attack. Remember, a 5G system can connect the “internet of things,” handy things like an automatic garage door or a remote temperature control.

Any decision by Western governments over whether to exclude Huawei from their markets would have to consider the possible impact on the speed and cost of 5G development, analysts say.
