Trump Predicts Jan. 6 Indictment Imminent

Former President Donald Trump on Aug. 1 said he soon expects to be indicted on a third set of felony charges, even as he presses ahead with his third presidential run.

The expected historic charges against Mr. Trump relate to a special counsel investigation into the former president’s attempts to dispute the 2020 election results and the violence that erupted at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Details of the charges are not yet known. A federal grand jury in Washington was seen at the courthouse earlier in the day.

Rumors about the indictment’s release began circulating during the afternoon of Aug. 1.

In a post to his Truth Social account at 4:41 p.m., Mr. Trump stated: “I hear that Deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024, will be putting out yet another Fake Indictment of your favorite President, me, at 5:00 P.M.

“Why didn’t they do this 2.5 years ago? Why did they wait so long? Because they wanted to put it right in the middle of my campaign. Prosecutorial Misconduct!”

Moments later, Mr. Trump added another post, stating, “Also, why are they putting out another Fake Indictment the day after the Crooked Joe Biden SCANDAL, one of the biggest in American history, broke out in the Halls of Congress??? A Nation In Decline!”

The Epoch Times has sought comment from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Special Counsel Jack Smith is due to deliver remarks at a press conference shortly.

Two weeks ago, Mr. Trump revealed that he had received a letter informing him that he was a target of a Jan. 6 grand jury investigation headed by Mr. Smith.

In a lengthy Truth Social post about the imminent indictment, Mr. Trump said the July 16 letter from Mr. Smith gave him four days to appear before a grand jury, “which almost always means an arrest and indictment.”

Mr. Trump’s campaign declined to release a copy of the target letter to The Epoch Times. But within hours of Mr. Trump’s announcement about the letter, leaks citing anonymous sources about its contents began appearing in publications such as Rolling Stone.
