During yesterday’s red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards, singer Katy Perry wore a very familiar all-denim dress and the media quickly picked up on the fact that she was trying to channel Britney Spears at the 28th American Music Awards in 2001.

Perry then explained that it was part of a challenge.

A few days prior to the awards ceremony, Perry saw Spears’ Woddy Woodpecker impression, and wrote on her Twitter page “This is the best thing I’ve seen all day bb “@britneyspears: Sometimes I do impressions… http://instagram.com/p/sBKoPKG8D8

To this, Spears replied that Perry should also do an impression and then post a video of herself in 24 hours. Perry took a bit longer than 24 hours but she pulled off the greatest impersonation ever. She dressed up as Spears in an all-denim dress and even recruited rapper Riff Raff to dress head-to-toe denim to impersonate Justin Timberlake.

Perry’s dress was made by Versace couture. She also said “I must admit my outfit is a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction #THISISHOWWEDOVMAS”

And Spears, certainly did like it, as she replied: “You looked amazing tonight.”
