NEW York—Mayor Michael Bloomberg released an update for November financial plans on Thursday, announcing many cuts across a long list of city departments. According to a statement from the mayor's office, city agencies are only allowed to hire one employee for every two that leave.

In the Department of Education, the financial plan seeks to replace last year's $853 million of federal stimulus money with city funding. Consequently, over 6,100 teachers will lose their jobs by 2012. “We face a significant challenge for next year, as federal stimulus dollars run dry, and the city still suffers from the impacts of the national economic downturn,” said Mayor Bloomberg in a statement.

Cuts will be made in many departments including police, fire, corrections, sanitation, children’s services, social and homeless services, youth and community development, health and mental hygiene, libraries, cultural affairs, aging, probation, housing preservation, finance department, transportation, and parks.
