Long Island Railroad (LIRR), New Jersey Transit, and Amtrak are joining together to redesign Penn Station.

Los Angeles-based construction firm Aecom has been contracted to come up with ways to improve both the appearance and experience of traveling through Penn Station by the end of the year, according to a Newsday report. The three transit agencies will then divide and decide which responsibilities to pursue.

“There is room at Penn Station for physical changes that will make travel more pleasant. We know the commuter experience can and should be improved,” LIRR President Helena Williams told Crain’s New York.

The plan, Penn Station Vision, is expected to be paid for in its early stages by MTA’s five-year capital plan, which starts in 2015.

Officials expect to redesign the underground space to improve traffic flow and lighting, but do not plan to expand the station.
