Robert de Niro, who said he wanted to “punch” Donald Trump “in the face,” is apparently changing his tone.
“I would only say that we’re all hoping, waiting and hoping, that he will lead the country in a way that’ll benefit everyone and benefit our neighbors around the world,” De Niro told ITK on Nov. 22, as reported by Fox News. He was asked about what message he would like to tell Trump, the president-elect.
“That’s all,” the “Raging Bull” and “Goodfellas” actor added. “We’re waiting and hoping, and we’ll see.”
De Niro, 73, was one of several icons to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on Tuesday. President Obama gave him the award.
In a video before Election Day, the longtime Academy Award-winning actor slammed Trump. “He talks how he’d like to punch people in the face? Well, I’d like to punch him in the face,” he said at the time.

“After he said the things that he said, anybody would want to punch him in the face,” De Niro told reporters on Tuesday, according to The Hill. “Many people told me ‘You said what I’d want to say.’ It’s just unacceptable to say those things in the situations that he said them in.”
De Niro added: “Now he’s president-elect and I just want to see what he’s going to do.”
