Spelling bee 2013: Arvind Mahankali, 13, from Bayside Hills in New York, won the 2013 Scripps National Speeling Bee after spelling the words tokonoma and knaidel.

The latter is a German-derived Yiddish word for a ball of dough. Tokonoma means a niche or alcove in the wall of a Japanese house for the display of a decorative object.
