Hafzanizam Bakhori of Malaysia tries desperately to hang on during a men’s sport climbing event at the Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, Sumatra, Indonesia on Nov. 12. In this discipline, bouldering, the competitor attempts to climb short, technical routes (boulders) without a rope but mats below for protection. The number of boulders they reach, combined with the number of times it took to reach them determines a competitor’s points. While people have been climbing since birth, sport climbing has only been an organized sport since The International Federation of Sport Climbing was founded in January of 2007. Sport climbing is on the shortlist for the 2020 Olympic Games.
