Goalball is a sport for the visually impaired that dates back to 1946. Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sepp Reindle invented the sport to help rehabilitate blind war veterans. Three players on each squad must wear eyeshades so there is equal impairment. The object is to toss the ball into the opponent’s goal with the opposing team using their body to block the shot. The ball is equipped with bells inside so that the players can hear the ball. Goalball will be played during the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
