As a “Zillennial,” I grew up in the 2000s, when toys were a big part of how kids spent their free time. Our screens were mostly video games and the family computer we had to share, and I’d like to think we turned out (mostly) okay.
These days, screens are a much bigger part of childhood. Parents use them as a “digital babysitter” to calm kids’ tantrums. Research has linked excessive screen time to health and developmental concerns, especially for young children and teenagers.
While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying some screen time, it’s important to make time for real-life and outdoor activities. Hands-on play encourages creativity, problem-solving, and imagination in ways that an iPad or TV can’t.
Some classic toys may eventually become a thing of the past. When was the last time you saw kids flying kites outside? Others, like LEGO, have stood the test of time and remain popular for a reason.
Whether you’re introducing a new generation to old favorites or looking for ways to encourage more screen-free play, here are some toys I owned and loved that I think are worth checking out.
