The National Security Implications of the Push for Electric Vehicles: Kelly Sloan

The White House has been pushing strongly for electric vehicles—despite their substantial negative impacts on the environment. And automakers, of course, have been following suit and building plants in which to manufacture those vehicles. Ford Motor Company announced earlier this year that it would invest $3.5 billion to build a plant in Michigan. As part of this development, Ford would be working with Contemporary Amperex Technology, a China-based firm, to manufacture the battery cells needed for the electric vehicles. After the announcement, Republicans and national security experts noted the serious problems involved in teaming up with a Chinese firm that has ties to the Chinese Communist Party. This Monday, however, Ford announced that they would pause construction on the project.
