Does Keto Diet or Intermittent Fasting Drop Weight Faster? Which One is Safer, and Easier to Stick to?

Both the keto diet and intermittent fasting can lead to weight loss. However, depending on which method you choose and how closely you follow its rules, the results can differ drastically.

Keto is not as simple as cutting out carbs, just as intermittent fasting is not as simple as periodically starving yourself. Understanding the basic principles of metabolism and nutrition with respect to both the keto diet and intermittent fasting can boost their effectiveness.

Dr. Daniel Monti MD joins Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon to compare the keto diet to intermittent fasting. He has guided patients in using both methods—and incorporating his own nutritional expertise—to optimize weight loss and health results.

“Some people [say] … I’m going to eat lots and lots of meat, [but] that doesn’t actually work … a very high-protein meal … kicks them out of ketosis,” he says.

Dr. Monti is a Professor and founding Chair of the Department of Integrative Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at Thomas Jefferson University, where optimizing brain health and micronutrient therapies are among the specialty treatments offered.
