A History of Insanity Pleas
You’ve probably been following the case of Lindsay Clancy. The mother is accused of killing her three children, and during her trial, she pleaded not guilty, claiming postpartum psychosis.
Aside from her, you have probably heard of another major case: Decarlos Brown Jr. allegedly stabbed 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska in the neck, killing her on a train. He’s now facing first-degree murder charges, but was found unfit to stand trial. He needs to get psychological treatment before the case can go forward.
These two cases are part of a broader trend. We have a mental health crisis. And because of that, we’re also having a crisis on how to handle crimes committed by individuals with mental health issues.
