Canadian Truckers Receive Major Victory From Federal Court—Rupa Subramanya | ATL:NOW

“We see this as a devastating rebuke to the Trudeau Government. The Federal Court of Canada essentially said that invoking the Emergencies Act—that was unconstitutional. It violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which is the equivalent of the Bill of Rights in the U.S. And while the Federal Court acknowledged that the protests were disruptive, it did not require the government to invoke the Emergencies Act. The Court said that the government had exceeded its authority.”

In this episode, I touch base with Rupa Subramanya, a journalist for The Free Press, who has been covering events surrounding Canada’s 2022 Freedom Convoy Protest.

“On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, Trudeau invokes rarely-used emergency powers known as the Emergencies Act, granting his government broad authority to respond to the trucker’s protests. So, it basically gives his government carte blanche to go after the protesters.”

We revisit what led up to the Federal Court’s ruling against the Trudeau government, and discuss its significance in Canada and beyond.

“This is a hugely important step and gives people a ray of hope, really, that finally, there is the rule of law. And you cannot get away with riding roughshod over people’s rights and liberties.”
