Fix the Gut Cause of Vaginal Infection, Bloating, IBS | Adeeti Gupta MD
“She came to me with recurrent vaginal issues—chronic infections, vaginal burning,” said women’s-health specialist, Dr. Adeeti Gupta, MD, of a 25-year-old patient displaying symptoms common to her age group.
“She was on antibiotics, fluconazole, antifungals … around the clock for two years. And then I started digging deeper, and I asked her about her gut,” Gupta said.
A board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, Gupta joined “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon” to reveal gut causes of the vaginal and related health problems that many women experience.
She was constantly bloated and didn’t have a bowel movement for three to four days, said Gupta, continuing to profile her young patient.
“So, we did the functional [medicine] approach. … I use gentle herbals and supplements, and, if [needed], advanced peptides.”
How much is the regularity, appearance, and consistency of a person’s poop an indicator of their gut health?
It’s a key indicator of their general health, and it’s the first question that doctors should ask their patients about, Gupta told “Vital Signs.”
Recounting the benefits seen by her patient through 18 months of functional medicine treatment, she said the young woman reported that her poop is no longer “like pellets” and that she has a large, normal bowel movement every day.
Her vaginal burning and stinging also ceased, and she is now off of antibiotics, Gupta said.
Of the young women who seek her aid with “vaginal issues,” 99 percent turn out to have gut issues, she said.
Why are gut issues so common these days, and why might women be particularly vulnerable to them?
“There’s an imbalance between the good bacteria and the bad bacteria, and the bad bacteria have taken over.”
Environmental toxins, like heavy metals, compromise the gut lining, which can lead to bad bacteria entering the bloodstream, Gupta said, resulting in inflammation in many parts of the body, including the vagina.
