Is DEI Doomed? Carol Swain on New Allegations Against Harvard’s President | ATL:NOW
“This person has risen to the leadership of a major university, but I don’t believe that the moral guidance is there or the intellectual integrity that you would expect. And I’m not calling for her to resign or to be fired, but I’m calling on the board of trustees of Harvard to look very seriously at these issues, and hold her to the same standard that they would hold a white male or a white female to.”
Carol Swain is a former tenured professor at Princeton and Vanderbilt University and the author of numerous books, including “The Adversity of Diversity; How the Supreme Court’s Decision to Remove Race from College Admissions Criteria Will Doom Diversity Programs.”
She recently became aware of plagiarism accusations against Harvard President Claudine Gay, who has come under fire for her testimony before Congress on campus antisemitism. One of the works allegedly plagiarized is from Dr. Swain’s award-winning 1993 book, “Black Faces, Black Interests: The Representation of African Americans in Congress.”
“During the time that I was tenured at the Ivy League, you had to have a major, pathbreaking work that plowed up new ground. I don’t see that among her publications. And so, for me, I don’t care about her dissertation. But I do care that the Academy, the progressives, the elites, they advanced her, and I don’t know that they held her to the same standard. And I think that it was dishonest for her not to have given more credit to where she got her ideas from, which would have been my book, ‘Black Faces, Black Interests,'” says Dr. Swain. “It’s not just the three of the university professors [who] testified before Congress. There are hundreds of other colleges and universities that are guilty of the same type of indifference towards Jewish Americans. They all need to be held accountable. And I think most of us need to find our voices when it comes to free speech, when it comes to civil rights laws, and our Constitution.”
