Long-Life Humans: What Was Their Secret? | Anthony Chaffee MD

From biblical times to the present, human history is littered with examples of humans living extraordinarily long lifespans, including Ojibwe elder Chief John Smith who died in 1922 and is widely believed to have lived to 137 years old

American physician, Dr. Anthony Chaffee MD draws a link between examples of exceptional longevity through history and eating simpler, meat-based diets. He is a staunch proponent of the carnivore diet, which is comprised solely of animal products.

“If you’re old enough to remember fighting and grown enough to fight in the war of 1812 and you die in the 1920s, you’re pretty … old,” he said of Smith, who’s age at death remains a matter of contention.

Chaffee says Smith’s purported lifespan is representative of better health and longevity among native and indigenous populations before their transition to more Western-style diets.

He points to a 2001 study, “The Tallest in the World: Native Americans of the Great Plains in the Nineteenth Century,” as evidence, in terms of height, that the health of Native Americans declined with the reduction of their natural diet.

“This [data gathering] was done in the late 1800s, after the bison were killed, so they already shifted their diet to a more Western diet,” said Chaffee.

“In that data, it says very clearly that the older adults were far taller, so the fathers and grandfathers were far taller than the than the young adult males,” he added.

From the Great Plains Indians to Japanese in the famed, long-living “blue zone” of Okinawa, what does digging beneath the surface of the data reveal about the link between what we eat and how long we live?

On “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon,” Chaffee challenges the broad assumption that humans are living healthier and longer than their more primitive ancestors.
