Burn Fat, Build Muscle by Optimizing Hormones Naturally

A key advantage of raising hormone levels, like testosterone, for men is that it “helps the effort feel good,” says obesity medicine doctor, Kyle Gillett.

The higher payoff for physical exertion leads males “to exercise more. They tend to do more resistance training, and that makes a bigger effect on the muscle mass and the fat mass,” he says.

Gillett joins “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon” to reveal the links between our hormones and our health, and the tools from dietary change to hormone replacement for balancing hormone levels.

“Total testosterone … [is] more important for how you feel and mental benefits, whereas free testosterone, something that clinicians call the free androgen index, is most important for metabolic purposes and muscle gain and fat loss,” says Gillett.

“And if your diet is too low in carbohydrates, then your free testosterone is often very low,” he adds.

How does food processing and treatment with pesticides change their health effect? Which diet serves best to optimize our hormone levels?

“My favorite diet is a diet that is mostly whole foods, ideally at least 80 percent whole foods, and one that each individual person can learn to like, so that they can actually adhere to this diet,” says Gillett, highlighting practicality, alongside nutrition, as important in diet choice.

Gillett is also board-certified in family medicine and is the owner of a functional medicine-based health clinic, Gillett Health, based in Leawood, Kansas.
