Scientists Discover How Sugar Suppresses Cancer-Fighting Genes

It is obvious that sugar contributes to obesity. But what about cancer?

Previously, scientists knew that sugar played an indirect role in causing cancer. The American Cancer Society, for example, recognizes that excess body weight is likely responsible for about 11 percent of cancers in women, and about 5 percent of cancers in men.

No direct link between cancer risk and sugar had been found, however—until recently.

Scientists from the Cancer Science Institute of Singapore have uncovered a new mechanism linking uncontrolled blood sugar with a higher risk of cancer.

Published in the journal CELL, the study describes how the problem begins when the body breaks down sugar to generate energy.
