White House Defends Deportations as Judge Threatens Charges; California to Sue Trump Administration Over Tariffs

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday pushed back on media narratives surrounding Kilmar Abrego Garcia, reiterating that he was an “illegal alien, MS-13 gang member, and foreign terrorist,” not a “Maryland father.” The mother of Rachel Morin—a woman killed by another illegal immigrant from El Salvador—also attended the press briefing.

Federal Judge James Boasberg said in a court order Wednesday that there was probable cause to find Trump administration officials in contempt of court for violating his order to turn around planes carrying Venezuelan illegal immigrants to a prison in El Salvador. The judge added that he could refer the matter for criminal prosecution. The Trump administration is appealing the court’s order.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Wednesday that they plan to sue the Trump administration over new tariffs, saying the move will cause “immediate and irreparable harm” to the Golden State.
