The bureau's decision to obtain the warrant was significantly influenced by the infamous Steeledossier of unverified opposition research on Trump. The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic Nation Committee paid for the dossier.
The allegations matched closely with some of the contents of the Steeledossier.
In public testimony, Brennan said the briefings were consistent with the findings of the Intelligence Community Assessment released on January 5, 2017.
In the dossier, Steele alleged that Page met with Kremlin insiders during the 2016 campaign. Steele also accused Page of working with Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort to conspire with Russians.
The new details beneath the previously blacked-out portions of the memo show that the FBI was still investigating allegations against Trump campaign associate Carter Page in May 2017, which were part of the infamous Steeledossier.
The so-called Steeledossier, which was paid for by Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee, served as the foundation for the Russia narrative.
Without the dossier, the FBI had no case.
The Schiff memo took the second approach. It confirmed the FBI and DOJ used the Steeledossier in Carter Page’s case, but sought to downplay the importance of the dossier.
The Steele memos would later be part of the infamous Steeledossier, which the FBI used, without due verification, to obtain a warrant to spy on former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page.
According to earlier reporting by The Epoch Times, the FBI relied heavily on news articles and open sources in its efforts to corroborate claims in the Steeledossier.
These legacy media reporters insist the real trigger for the Trump campaign investigation wasn't the Steeledossier allegations but instead Mifsud’s contact with Papadopoulos in London in March 2016.
But none of the 103 key allegations contained in the Steeledossier were verified during former special counsel Robert Mueller’s 22-month investigation.
