Less than three months after the appeal, then-CCP leader JiangZemin launched a violent nationwide persecution against Falun Gong. The persecution is still ongoing today.

For the past four years, Chinese leader Xi Jinping has been steadily maneuvering into an advantageous position to deal with his predecessor JiangZemin and end the culture of corruption that Jiang fostered in China.
Then-CCP leader JiangZemin, fearing any group he could not control, ordered the nationwide ban in July 1999 and launched a campaign to “ruin their reputation, bankrupt them financially, and destroy them physically.”
The arrest of JiangZemin, if true, would be the climax of a power struggle between current Communist Party leader Xi Jinping and JiangZemin that has lasted throughout Xi's reign.
