The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is already barred from authorizing the import or sale of new equipment made by Chinese companies on its "covered list," including Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua.
Huawei was placed on the Commerce Department’s trade restriction list, known as the Entity List, in 2019. The Pentagon has identified Huawei as one of the Chinese companies that have ties to the Chinese military.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threatened that his country would hold back intelligence sharing with any partner that kept Huawei in its critical infrastructure.
Canada ultimately banned Huawei equipment in 2022, aligning with its allies.
Huawei allegedly worked with Iranian authorities to install Huawei gear throughout the country and improve the surveillance and security capabilities of the authoritarian state.
Tehran has also been a stalwart ally of Beijing on various issues.
In 2019, Huawei was excluded from a Czech tender to build a tax portal, after officials said the project could not include vendors subject to an active warning from the cybersecurity watchdog.
Huawei phones mostly use their own HarmonyOS, which, while compatible with Android applications, does not support Google services. It remains unclear how Chinese citizens will be able to use this circumvention platform.”

Both Huawei and ZTE were previously designated as national security threats, and companies were also required to stop using government funds to buy equipment from the firms.
David Sacks, chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, said in January that shipping advanced chips to China will discourage competitors, such as the sanctioned Chinese company Huawei.
While Huawei decided to leave the U.S. inverter market in 2019—the year its 5G telecoms equipment was banned—it remains a dominant supplier elsewhere.
Huawei declined to comment.
TSMC Chip Found in Huawei Product
TSMC said last week that it had informed the United States that one of its chips was reportedly found in a product produced by the Chinese company Huawei Technologies Co.
Meanwhile, Wi-Fi routers from Huawei and TP-Link have documented firmware vulnerabilities that make it easy for hackers to steal data, monitor activity, or disable connected security systems.
Huawei was also the leader in approved technical contributions; 3GPP members approved 5,855 contributions from Huawei, surpassing Qualcomm (1,994) and Intel (962), according to Hart at the time.
Canada faced warnings from the Five Eyes alliance in 2019 for not banning China’s Huawei from its 5G networks, with U.S. officials threatening to limit intelligence sharing with countries keeping Huawei in critical infrastructure.
Lawmakers, officials, and experts around the world had raised national security concerns about Chinese telecom services, including Huawei, by the early 2000s.
Huawei Versus Apple
