It is unacceptable that China threatens Canada simply because it followed the law in its arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

Earlier this month, Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief financial officer and daughter of its billionaire founder, was arrested in Canada for possible extradition to the United States.

China has reacted angrily to Canada's arrest on Dec. 1 of Chinese executive Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies and Spavor's disappearance is likely to further escalate the diplomatic row.

The United States will move to formally seek the extradition of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou from Canada, the Globe and Mail reported.

The first case accuses the company, as well as Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, of violating U.S. sanctions against Iran. The second alleges Huawei stole trade secrets from U.S. mobile carrier T-Mobile.

China’s latest attempt to pressure Canada after the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou is to block exports of canola—a truly Canadian product—that were worth $2.7 billion in 2018, according to the Canola Council of Canada (CCC).

Since Canada arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on an extradition request from the United States in December 2018, Beijing has arrested two Canadian citizens, with reports last week of another Canadian having been detained in China.

Wanzhou didn't break any Canadian laws.

She was sentenced on June 30 by a Beijing court—just days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau rejected calls to release Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei CFO arrested in Canada on a U.S. extradition request.

The indictment of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who was in Canada fighting extradition to the United States, was also cited in the “wrongdoings” list. Meng later reached a deal with U.S. prosecutors and was allowed to return to China in late September.

Rising Tensions Diplomatic tensions between Canada and China have escalated since the high-profile arrest of Meng Wanzhou, an executive and the heiress-apparent to China’s flagship tech company Huawei.

Thus they have no plan when things go awry, such as in the case of the arrest of Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver and Beijing’s subsequent retaliation—arbitrarily detaining two Canadians in China and banning imports of Canadian canola and pork.

With the highly publicized arrest of its executive Meng Wanzhou in Canada, Chinese telecom giant Huawei—which has been a source of concern in the intelligence community for its close ties to Beijing—has been pushed into deeper turmoil.

Little wonder, then, that Chinese authorities assumed they could simply demand the release of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou when she was legally detained at Vancouver International Airport. 

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, 46, who is also the daughter of the company founder, was arrested on Dec. 1 at the request of the United States.

It should be remembered that China still has two Canadian hostages that it snatched off the street and jailed—in a brazen act that can only be described as blackmail—in return for the lawful and appropriate Canadian detention of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou
