(Sean Gallup/Getty Images) Johnson initially favoured a limited role for Huawei, but eventually decided to strip Huawei equipment from Britain’s 5G networks by 2027, due to pressure from the United States and his own backbench Conservative MPs.

But Canadian companies have until June 2024 to remove the existing Huawei and ZTE 5G equipment, and until December 2027 to remove their 4G equipment.

The decision comes after talks about China and foreign tech companies like Huawei brought innovation in the 5G field. Huawei is a Chinese company which has been at the forefront of 5G technology.

The bill was introduced in June 2022, shortly after the government banned equipment from Chinese telecom giants like Huawei from the 5G network. Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act, has only completed first reading in the House of Commons.

As of June 2022, Huawei controls more than 3,700 5G patent families, according to data compiled by the Council on Foreign Relations. By comparison, Apple owns a little more than 500. Huawei is presently worth about $200 billion.

For starters, it named Huawei 5G as a specific risk and stopped U.S. companies from doing business with Huawei. In April 2020, it created the Clean Network program.

She also praised the UK for deciding to exclude Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei from its 5G network, calling the company "a big threat."
