On June 4, 1989, in what is now known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) deployed large numbers of troops and tanks to violently suppress students who were participating in pro-democracy protests at Tiananmen Square.

"We remember the Chinese Communist Party’s brutal crackdown 36 years ago in Tiananmen Square and commemorate the courage of the innocent people killed and imprisoned that day.

“So don't tell me that human rights and Tiananmen [are] about them, about China. It's about here. It's about us. It's about now.”

In 1989, the then-college student was arrested in Shanghai for supporting the Tiananmen Square protests and while in prison, he said he witnessed evidence of China’s execution system being used to harvest organs from prisoners.

So I happened to be at Tiananmen Square 10 days before the massacre.

“We remember those who made their voices heard peacefully in [Tiananmen Square]. We stand with those who do so today.”

This signals a zero-tolerance policy toward any reference to the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Political analyst Sun Li, based in Beijing, said the Tiananmen Square Massacre remains a deep wound in China’s modern political history.
