Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had an interesting adjective for new defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s system.
The Cowboys hired Parker in the offseason to replace Matt Eberflus after the Cowboys finished the 2025 season 30th in yards allowed per game and last in points allowed. The Cowboys’ offense is the first to be exposed to the new scheme, and Lamb was impressed by their communication and smooth transition to the field. The defensive players, meanwhile, all had high praise for Parker’s attention to detail.
“It’s annoying,” Lamb said at his locker Thursday. “It’s been annoying to prepare against, but obviously seeing it in practice every day, I mean, it’s kind of unique just seeing different guys communicate and being able to understand and take what they learn from the meeting room and being able to easily translate it on the field. I mean, it’s good to go against. It’s very tricky, but as for offenses, we just got to play fast and get to our spots.”
Edge rusher Rashan Gary gave the defense’s perspective.
“From the first time we [were] able to start installing, been talking about the back end to the front and how we all work together, how all 11 guys [are] on the same page, speaking the same language. We’re having walkthroughs, having practices now day in and day out; the intentionality to get better and be on top of the details has been that way. So the energy that we have right now, we’ve just got to keep on rolling and keep going.”
After starting his career as a defensive backs coach then a defensive analyst at the college level, then as a defensive quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers, Parker started his NFL career in earnest with the Denver Broncos in 2021. He served as defensive backs coach in Denver under three head coaches and three DCs in three years: Vic Fangio and Ed Donatell in 2021, Nathaniel Hackett and Ejiro Evero in 2022, and Sean Payton and Vance Joseph in 2023.
When Fangio was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles, Parker reunited with him for two seasons as DBs coach and passing game coordinator.
Safety P.J. Locke played under Parker with the Broncos, but is getting a new experience with Parker running a full defense.
“He’s a little bit more swaggier,” Locke said. “He comes with new jumpsuits every day and stuff like that. He always had the shoe game, the Georgia shoe game. But as a coach, he’s the same guy. He’s very, very observant, very detailed. And I know he’s just trying to get everything going in the right direction. That’s it. So everything’s the same.”
But Locke also said he challenges his players mentally.
“He definitely keeps you on your toes,” he said. “He wants you to be engaged during meetings so he might ask you something, [you] might be going over film and [he’ll] just kind of pop a question on you, just making sure you’re locked in, that type of thing. But also, as a safety or as any DB, linebacker, anybody on position, you hate gray area. You can’t practice over every scheme or every offensive route concept, and I think the gray areas, him making sure everybody’s on the same page, the communication is big on that. And so if you’ve got any type of questions, he’s always there to make sure he has answers for them.”
Defensive tackles Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams both pointed to Parker’s attention to detail, pre-snap communication, and consistent high level of play. Gary highlighted his ability to maximize his players and create one-on-one matchups along the defensive front.
Williams also pointed to the success that other teams have had running similar systems.
“A lot of people running the same scheme have unbelievable success,” Williams said. “You’ve got the Rams, you’ve got Denver, you’ve got the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Seattle Seahawks kind of run the same, similar scheme. [The] New England Patriots kind of run a similar scheme. So, all the top defenses in the league [are] running this scheme and [I’m] super excited, the way that CP runs it, the meticulous [way] he is, man, the detail he [hones] in [on], and to be around a great group of guys.”
