The 16-year-old male suspect was not named, but taken into custody. The condition of the girl who was shot is not clear.

The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the call before 8 a.m.

The shooter was “located and taken into custody without incident,” the statement said.

Officials said at a news conference that the suspect and victim were in the cafeteria when the incident unfolded, NBC reported.

The relationship between the shooter and victim is not clear.

District Superintendent Lee Joffre said, “I do know that the shooter left the building immediately after the shots.”

The sheriff’s office said that the female student was “was airlifted to Parkland” hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and more information in the case will be shared as becomes available, said police.

Italy, Texas, is located between Dallas and Waco.
