Prime Minister Mark Carney touted Canada as a country with the resources, talent, technology, and capital sought by the world at a ceremony on Sept. 13 marking the opening of a major summit in Toronto aimed at accelerating new investment into the country.
Canadians would build more, trade more with other provinces and with the world, and create more sustainable prosperity at home, Carney said ahead of the Canada Investment Summit 2026 set to take place from Sept. 14 to 15.
Carney said the summit brings together some of the world’s largest investors who collectively manage more than $120 trillion in assets.
“Our greatest strength is something that can’t be found on any balance sheet: trust,” he said at the Royal Ontario Museum.
“We have what the world wants: the energy, the resources, the talent, the technology and the capital.”
Carney said Canadian businesses and pension funds are putting more capital into the domestic economy.
“In the last week alone, a number of them—and I’m not going to name them, because I suspect there are a few more announcements coming—a number of them have announced plans already to put hundreds of billions of dollars of additional capital to work here in Canada,” he said.
Ottawa describes the summit as a first-of-its-kind gathering in Canada, designed to bring together leading global investors and boost investment in Canada.
“Canada has what the world wants, and we are a reliable, stable partner in a world that is anything but,” the summit’s webpage says, citing the country’s AAA credit rating, banking stability, and educated workforce.
Canada has “ preferential access to 1.5 billion consumers representing two-thirds of global GDP, through 16 free-trade agreements across 51 countries,” it says.
