Muslim Girl Wearing Hijab Renamed ‘Isis’ in Yearbook

A Muslim girl at Los Osos High School in Rancho Cucamonga, California discovered she was called “Isis” in her yearbook—a name easily confused with ISIS, the terror group based in Syria and Iraq.

“I guess I’m Isis in the yearbook …,” Bayan Zehlif tweeted from her Twitter account with a photo of her yearbook.

She then went on Facebook to further express her frustrations about the misnamed photo.

“I am extremely saddened, disgusted, hurt and embarrassed that the Los Osos High School yearbook was able to get away with this,” she wrote on Facebook. “The school reached out to me and had the audacity to say that this was a typo. I beg to differ, let’s be real.”

Chaffey Joint Union High School District Supt. Mat Holton said Zehlif was mistakenly identified as another student whose first name is Isis, reported The Los Angeles Times. The student named Isis transferred earlier in the year, said Trevor Santellan, one of the students who apparently worked on the yearbook, according to ABC7.

The school’s yearbook took to Twitter and tweeted an apology about the mishap saying they should have checked each name “carefully.”

Susan Petrocelli, the principal of Los Osos High, also took to Twitter and apologize about the mistake that’s going under investigation.

LOHS is taking every step possible to correct & investigate a regrettable misprint discovered in the yearbook. We sincerely apologize.

In a press release on May 8, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA)  said that they too are currently investigating the incident.

“We join with the family in their concern about a possible bias motive for this incident and in the deep concern for their daughter’s safety as a result of being falsely labeled as a member of a terrorist group,” said Hussam Ayloush, the council’s Los Angeles executive director. “No student should have to face the humiliation of being associated with a group as reprehensible as ISIS.”
