A fatal fire in Shanghai’s large Agricultural Wholesale Center, located in Pudong, killed six people and injured more than ten others.
Authorities say rescue workers are searching for survivors, and that the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The fire broke out at about 8:30 p.m on Jan. 6, spreading rapidly through the dry goods shops and fruit market areas.
Eyewitnesses described billowing smoke and sky-high flares which were visible kilometers away.
According to Chinese language news site Eastday, about 80 fire trucks were dispatched, bringing the fire under control in about one hour.
Three women and two men injured in the fire were sent to Changhai Hospital for treatment. A 57-year-old woman is in critical condition with burns on more than 80 percent of her body.
A witness said that after the fire started, a shopkeeper at the market arrived and rushed into the burning building to retrieve money from his store – a sum of between six and seven million yuan ($963,036 to $1,123,542). He was later found dead by firefighters, his body curled over, clutching the money.
