In the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami to hit Japan, aid has been offered by various organizations around the world.
Bonhams Fine Art Auctioneers has donated 5 percent of the buyer’s premium on each work sold at its Fine Japanese Works of Art auction on May 22, during New York’s Asia Week. The money goes to the Japan Earthquake relief fund through the Japan Society in New York. Bonhams will do the same at the two London auctions of Japanese art in May.

“At this time of unprecedented personal tragedy in one of the world’s greatest cultures, we think it is appropriate to draw funds from culture of the past to help rebuild Japan’s culture of the future,” said Colin Sheaf, chairman of Bonhams Asia in a press release.
“Bonhams is deeply committed to supporting Japanese art and culture and to assisting its citizens in recovering from this devastating event,” Mr. Sheaf said.
The sale realized over $1.33 million and achieved some notable selling prices. There was a large and varied selection of pieces ranging from intricate ivory carvings to pottery and porcelain, along with a strong section of paintings and screens and ancient Japanese battle armor.
