Dear Next Generation: How to Gain the Most From Your College Experience

BY Dear Next Generation TIMEDecember 28, 2025 PRINT

I was a nontraditional student when I began my college experience because I had first served in the military. I was probably the oldest student in both my undergraduate and graduate classes. No one forced or counseled me to go; I just felt a strong desire.

At first, I committed myself to the learning journey by reading textbooks, completing assignments, and studying to understand. Because I pursued end goals, the coursework required my undivided attention and cooperation. I was responsible for fulfilling requirements and my ultimate objective was to succeed.

Years later, when I enrolled in graduate studies, it was about much more than receiving a degree; I felt compelled. It wasn’t because everyone else was doing it, but because I was meant to pursue this path and God opened the door. The timing was right, and scholarships opened.

Although it didn’t always feel so, the requirements to research, read, and write were priceless. Many of my professors’ expertise and experiences were rich and valuable. I felt privileged and appreciative as I studied daily, knowing that what I was exposed to was changing my heart. Each writing assignment equaled more than a test score; each helped to better equip me for a calling upon my life to serve.

Consider these tried-and-true tips:

  • Keep your goal and purpose in sight.
  • Even if you feel squeezed, like I frequently did, do all that is assigned to the best of your ability.
  • Don’t procrastinate.
  • Be honest; no cheating. Those who do only cheat themselves.
  • Aim to finish strong, one day at a time.
  • Maintain balance: relationships with loved ones and friends, healthy eating, moderate exercise and sunshine, refreshing sleep.

Finally, when enrolling in college, prayerfully consider God’s direction. Invite him into your college experience, and your life will make a significant difference!

“Show me the path where I should walk, O Lord; point out the right road for me to follow./ Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me./ All day long I put my hope in you” (Psalm 25:4–5).

We call on all of our readers to share the timeless values that define right and wrong and pass the torch, if you will, through your wisdom and hard-earned experience. We feel that the passing down of this wisdom has diminished over time and that only with a strong moral foundation can future generations thrive.
