Protein Superfood Healthy Bites: Yes, You Can Eat Them As Dessert

BY Christine Beal Dunst TIMEMarch 25, 2026 PRINT

These Protein Superfood Healthy Bites have become a staple in our home—a client favorite and a lifesaver on busy days when you want something sweet yet healthy. Made from real superfoods with no refined grains or sugars, these gluten-free and dairy-free bites come together in less than 10 minutes.

Whether it’s a pre- or post-workout snack, breakfast on the run, a 4 p.m. energy boost, or even a wholesome dessert, these bites deliver steady energy and satisfaction. Keep them in the freezer for easy grab-and-go nourishment.

My kids love them too. It makes me happy knowing they are reaching for something that fuels their bodies instead of cookies or processed snacks that spike blood sugar and lead to crashes. We make these together often—rolling them into little golf-ball-size treats has been a fun kitchen ritual for years. When kids help make the food, they’re far more likely to enjoy it.

Each ingredient serves a functional purpose and I love teaching clients to always have these pantry staples on hand to make this healthy treat. Gluten-free steel-cut oats, blended into flour, provide fiber and slow-digesting carbohydrates that help regulate blood sugar and keep you full longer. Chia seeds offer omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and plant-based protein to support heart health and sustained energy. Ground flax seeds add lignans and additional fiber to support hormone balance and digestion. Hemp hearts deliver complete plant protein and healthy fats that support muscle repair and satiety.

Ceylon cinnamon adds natural sweetness while supporting healthy blood sugar regulation and is anti-inflammatory. Nut butter has protein and healthy fats that stabilize energy and make these bites deeply satisfying—they also help the balls hold together well. Coconut oil provides quick, clean-burning fuel and supports brain health, while a touch of honey or maple syrup offers natural sweetness without the sharp spike of refined sugar.

You can also get creative and make these your own by adding coconut flakes, matcha, or berries.

The result is a balanced snack that supports stable blood sugar, sustained energy, and fewer cravings—something especially important for women in midlife, growing kids, and truly everyone.

Pro tip: They taste amazing straight from the freezer and hold their shape beautifully.

Serves 4

  • 1 cup gluten-free steel-cut organic oats (blended into flour)
  • 3 tablespoons chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • 4 tablespoons hemp hearts
  • 1 tablespoon Ceylon cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup nut butter

Blend dry ingredients until evenly combined. The oats should be blended into a flour consistency. Add remaining ingredients and blend on low, stopping to fold every 30 seconds, until a thick dough forms. Transfer dough to a bowl and roll into golf-ball-size bites. Store in a glass container in the freezer for best texture and freshness. Freeze for at least 30 minutes before enjoying them.
