This week, we feature a popular video game franchise kick its way into the big screen and a nostalgic mashup of Hanna-Barbera superheroes with a mystery-solving duo.

‘Street Fighter’

It’s 1993, and martial artists Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) have drifted apart until Chun-Li (Callina Liang) calls them into the World Warrior Tournament. The legends get back into the ring, but a sinister scheme could turn their reunion into a dangerous showdown with a tyrant.

I once spent plenty of quarters on these arcade games, and the movie brought back the fun of crowding around cabinets for one more match. Fans who remember those days should enjoy the colorful fights, unique characters, and flashy moves.

‘Scoob!’

As a lonely kid, Shaggy Rogers (Will Forte as the adult Shaggy) finds his best friend in Scooby-Doo (Frank Welker), and, before long, they’re solving cases with other young sleuths. Years later, villain Dick Dastardly (Jason Isaacs) drags them into a global scheme.

I missed the old-fashioned mystery once the story swerved toward superheroes and saving the world, but there’s still plenty to enjoy in its humor, colorful animation, and the bond between Shaggy and Scooby. Friendship and loyalty keep the adventure upbeat.

A Mechanic Meets His Match

‘I.Q.’

Princeton mechanic Ed Walters (Tim Robbins) falls for Catherine Boyd (Meg Ryan), a brainy doctoral student engaged to a professor. Her uncle, Albert Einstein (Walter Matthau), likes Ed better and cooks up a ridiculous plan to pass him off as a scientific genius.

The acting is engaging and humorous, with Matthau stealing scenes and Robbins and Ryan working well together. But while the plot is enjoyable, the movie’s casual treatment of Catherine falling for Ed while still engaged is questionable.

Cash, Climbing, and Betrayal

‘The Looters’

Jesse Hill (Rory Calhoun) and Pete Corder (Ray Danton) climb their way into the Colorado Rockies to rescue plane-crash survivors, only to find a fortune waiting in the wreckage.

I had more fun with this potboiler than its modest premise suggests, especially once greed takes hold of Pete, and Jesse has to juggle keeping everyone alive while also refusing to be bought off.
