Uzbekistan signed an $8.5 billion deal with Boeing on Sept. 22 to buy 22 Dreamliner aircraft, in what the aircraft maker described as “the single largest order in the airline’s history.”
The agreement was made following Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s recent visit to the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the agreement in a Truth Social post, noting that Uzbekistan Airways will purchase 22 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft under the deal.
Trump said that he expects the deal to create more than 35,000 jobs in the United States.
“Today I want to congratulate President Mirziyoyev on signing a GREAT Deal with Boeing,” Trump stated. “President Mirziyoyev is a man of his word, and we will continue to work together on many more items!”
The U.S. International Trade Administration (ITA) said that Uzbekistan Airways and Boeing signed the agreement on the sidelines of the 80th U.N. General Assembly in New York City on Sept. 22, calling it “the largest commercial aircraft agreement of its kind in Central Asia.”
About $7.3 billion of the $8.5 billion deal represents U.S. export content in the aircraft’s manufacturing, according to the ITA.
The agency stated that Uzbekistan and Boeing also signed a framework aimed at enhancing the nation’s connectivity, supporting fleet growth, and driving job creation in American manufacturing.
“Boeing is a symbol of the strength of American manufacturing, and this milestone agreement is yet another win for American workers,” William Kimmitt, undersecretary of commerce for International Trade, said in a statement.
Mirziyoyev, who was present at the signing ceremony, also met with Boeing Global President Brendan Nelson to discuss their strategic partnership, according to his press office.
During the meeting, Mirziyoyev underscored the need to implement the new aircraft supply contract and affirmed his nation’s commitment to building long-term cooperation with Boeing, it stated.
Boeing confirmed the deal in a separate statement. The U.S.-based company stated that Uzbekistan Airways will purchase 14 Dreamliners with options for another eight of the aircraft under the agreement.
“The first 787 operator in Central Asia, Uzbekistan Airways leverages its fleet of 787-8 airplanes to connect markets in Europe, Asia and the U.S., including a direct flight to New York City,” it stated.
Uzbekistan Airways Chairman Shukhrat Khudaikulov said the contract would strengthen the airline’s standing in Central Asia and expand its global connectivity.
“This step reaffirms our ambitions and strategic commitment to sustainable growth,” Khudaikulov said in the statement released by Boeing.
Boeing also announced that it signed a memorandum of cooperation with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Transport aimed at expanding the country’s aviation ecosystem.
