Tributes were pouring in for Dolly Parton following her death at age 80, with admirers across the globe mourning the loss of the singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist.
News of Parton’s death on Tuesday prompted an immediate heartfelt response from fellow musicians, actors, public figures, and fans across social media.
The legendary singer is being remembered for her remarkable career spanning more than six decades, her generosity, humor, and unmistakable personality.
Among those honoring Parton was country star Reba McEntire, who remembered her longtime friend with an emotional message reflecting on their decades-long relationship.
“Dolly, thank you for all the wonderful things you did for us here on earth,” McEntire wrote, alongside an array of photos of the two over the years. “Your love, your music and you gave so much with your huge huge heart.
“There will never ever be another you, We will remember and cherish every memory and every note you ever played and sang.”
Kacey Musgraves and Keith Urban echoed the sentiments, extolling Parton’s lasting influence across generations and her groundbreaking career in country music and entertainment.
“The world feels a lot less sparkly all of a sudden,” Musgraves said via X.
“Heartbroken today. Dolly Parton,” Urban added to his Instagram stories. “Honestly, I have no words right now.”
The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, where Parton first performed when she was just 13 years old before becoming a longtime member, said her impact would continue to be felt for generations to come.
“She was such a wonderful woman,” remembered Paul McCartney, who met Parton at the Opry. “She was so bubbly and full of life. … Her songwriting, her singing and her philanthropy were unrivaled in the world of country music and it is hard to imagine living in a world without Dolly.”
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, similarly praised Parton’s impact, saying her legacy was rooted not in celebrity but in her humanity.
Parton’s longtime friend and “9 to 5” co-star Lily Tomlin mourned the singer, sharing a photo of the two to Instagram with the caption: “No words.”
Other performers and actors including Dionne Warwick, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Roberts, and Seth MacFarlane also shared their memories and admiration.
“They say don’t meet your heroes. They were wrong about her,” Curtis wrote on Instagram.
“Her kindness, generosity, and authenticity were evident from moment one,” MacFarlane posted on X.
Parton’s death was announced in a video statement by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, who spoke on behalf of the family. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
“Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” Seaver said in the message.
“My family and I have shared a lifetime of beautiful memories with Dolly, but so have you,” he said. “She has always been on your television, your record player, your CD, and on your phone playlist, becoming an extended part of your family, whether you liked it or not.”
Parton is survived by siblings, numerous nieces, nephews, and members of her extended family. She and her husband, Carl Dean, who died last year, never had children of their own.
Funeral arrangements for Parton, in accordance with her wishes, will remain private, with a small service planned for close family members.
Her family encouraged fans and friends to remember her by continuing to share tributes online and, in lieu of flowers, making donations to “Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library,” the literacy organization she founded.
